I wrote a program to display zebra stripes for a surface. For those who don't know what zebra stripes are, they are used by industrial designers and mechanical engineers to judge the continuity and smoothness of a shape or surface. See the following examples for a clearer picture.

Zebra Stripes Example

I wrote a program that will display these lines on any given STL surface and output it as a VRML file. It has an adjustable light source, as well as adjustable parameters for the stripes. You can even change the intensity of the light.  The following is an output for the surface cos(2x)*sin(2x).

Programmed in MATLAB.
